Rare Hockey Program From Darryl Sittler’s Historic 10 Point Night
|Rare Hockey Program from Darryl Sittler’s Record Breaking “10 Point Night”
Darryl Sittler’s “10 Point Night” is one of the most iconic records in all of hockey, and one of the few offensive records not owned by the legendary Wayne Gretzky. Just prior to the biggest game of his career, Sittler had been called out by Leafs owner, Harold Ballard, for his lack of offensive production, and the team itself was in a bit of a funk, with a recent dismal 1-4-2 record. On the other hand, rookie netminder, Davey Reece, had lead Don Cherry’s first place Boston Bruins to an impressive string of seven victories in a row on their way into the contest. As you all know by now, the Bruins intimidating record and Ballard’s public taunting didn’t stop the Maple Leafs from coming up with a big upset victory on February 7, 1976, and a record setting six goals and four assists on the part of their Captain. Despite breaking Maurice Richard’s for most points in a single game (9), according to Sittler himself, there is a distinct lack of memorabilia that has survived from that game. The stick is gone, the jersey is gone, the puck is gone, the tape of the complete game is gone, and as of 2016, the Hockey Hall of Fame possessed only one program from the game, and it’s missing the cover! But, thanks to an anniversary date, and some fortuitous saving on the wife of a local couple, (who lived in Toronto at the time), I was able to get my hands on a copy of this unique and truly rare item.
But what saddens him is the lack of memorabilia from that game. The puck and his jersey were simply reused, now long gone. The stick was lost in a fire. And any video of the complete game has been lost.
