THE STORY BEHIND AA SPORTS CARDS CONSIGNMENT SALE OF A VERY RARE CARL WEATHERS ROOKIE CARD (aka Apollo Creed)
|I always love when a good television show or a movie shows a flashback. The backstory can really help flesh out a character in this case, a sports card. We recently had the good fortune to receive a football card collection on consignment that contained an extremely rare Carl Weathers rookie card. Many people know Carl Weathers as an actor, having famously played Apollo Creed in the Rocky films, as well as many other roles in action movies alongside the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, and other famous actors. What most people don’t know is that Carl Weathers had a brief and, (no offence intended), very unremarkable career in the CFL. Because of the knowledge and experience we accumulated over the course of the last 40 plus years of collecting, buying, and selling sports cards, we knew what our consignor had, and that enabled us to get him get a substantial sum of money, (in American funds), for the sale of his 1971 Carl Weathers CFL Chevron Touchdown Bonus card. The story/journey behind this card is best summed up below by the gentleman who hired us to sell his collection. He recently sent us this review which contains the story behind the Carl Weathers rookie card, and his thoughts on his experience dealing with AA Sports Cards.

In going through my childhood collection of cards, I came across a Carl Weathers BC Lions rookie card that I hadn’t thought about in years. In doing a bit of research, I realized the rarity of this card and the only online history I could find was with Mike and Dave at AAsportscards.com. They had brokered a sale for another client and had achieved a significant return. As I am not connected to the network that they provide, I thought I would give them the opportunity to duplicate their success. The resulting journey was both fun and rewarding. I sent them some early 70’s hockey cards, and some 1971 CFL cards as well as the Carl Weathers card. They bundled and sold the hockey cards on Ebay and got an excellent return. The CFL cards were sold individually and also got more than I was expecting. For the Carl Weathers card, they recommended that we grade the card, which they were able to expedite. They then displayed it at their table at a card show where they networked and got the attention of a larger auction house (Heritage). The card ended up being listed in one of their large auctions that gets worldwide attention. The return from the auction was much more than I had ever anticipated when I initially sent them the card. What I enjoyed the most was the communication and the shared excitement that both Dave and Mike had for the 6 months journey the Carl Weathers card took. As someone who loved collecting years ago it was thrilling to watch the auction in live time and know that the guys did all they could to maximize the value of the card.
I would recommend Mike and Dave to anyone who is thinking of selling their collections. Their Ebay presence and skills with presentation and grouping cards together ensures the maximum return. The consignment communication and documentation is easy to understand and crystal clear. Also, if there is a rare, high value card, they will do all they can to make sure that it gets the highest return. I look forward to working with them again in the future.
